AH41 Jewish Self-Hatred

What is Jewish Self-Hatred and how is it an outgrowth of Enlightenment, Emancipation, and Assimilation? This question will be explored in lights of debates over Jews and citizenship, the Judenfrage, the origin and development of antisemitism from Luther to Marr and Treitschke, et al. Texts also will be taken from the works, memoirs, etc. of Rahel Varnhagen, Heinrich Heine, Solomon Maimon, Ludwig Borne, Karl Marx, Otto Weinninger, Anton Kuh, Theodor Lessing, etc. The modern manifestations of this term, after the Holocaust, will also be examined. This will be contrasted to Jewish pride and Yiddishkeit in Eastern Europe, on the one hand, and on the fear of being seen as “too Jewish” in America in the pre-and post-WWII era.
